Graphic Arts
designates all processes for the handmade production of multiple
pictures on paper. This includes lithography, serigraphy, etchings,
engravings and woodcuts. All work is done by the artist and editions
are limited.
The woodcut is the earliest form of graphic arts. Using small knives and gouges, the artist carves away
portions of the surface from a block of wood. The
cutaway sections appear white in the final print, and
the uncut parts produce the image. Using a roller, the artist coats the uncut parts with ink and places a
sheet of paper over the block. The paper is then
rubbed, which transfers the inked image onto the
paper. For a colored woodcut, the artist must carve
and print a separate block for each color.
